I den allmänna historieskrivningen beskrivs nästan alltid skeenden ur det rådande systemets synvinkel.
Detta har bland annat lett till att stora delar av historien har osynliggjorts.
En av de delar som knappt skildrats, eller skildrats på ett enögt sett, är sjöröveriets historia.
